Gastineau Human Services (GHS) was established in 1965 by the Juneau Council of Churches to meet the alcohol treatment needs of Southeast Alaska through services centered in Juneau, the regional hub.
Incorporated as the Gastineau Council on Alcoholism in 1966, GHS board members immediately mobilized local support for the treatment of alcoholism, resulting in the establishment of Juneau's first halfway house.
As the region’s needs have changed over the years, GHS has evolved into an umbrella organization for a number of programs centered around the treatment and the care of society’s marginalized people – the addicted, the homeless, the mentally ill, and those involved in the criminal justice system.
