Resident Advisor
Glacier Manor, Community Residential Center
Permanent/Full-Time and Relief Positions Available - Range 8, Step A: $12.28 per hour
Under the general supervision of the Shift Supervisor, the Resident Advisor (RA) assists in all aspects of daily operation of the Community Residential Center (CRC).. The RA’s primary function is facility security, resident accountability, and enforcement of CRC rules and policy. In addition to fairly enforcing program rules and policies, RA’s assist residents to understand and comply with societal expectations and integrate back into the community.
Illustrative Tasks
- Responsible for strict resident accountability and tracking while in the facility and out in the community.
- Conducts a resident count within the facility and maintains a facility activity log which shows the number of residents in the facility, and the number of residents in the community.
- Generates and maintains a daily sign-in and sign-out log which contains time out, destination, purpose, authorized return time, and method of transportation.
- Conducts frequent visual surveillance on residents in the community, and maintains a surveillance log which lists dates, times, and locations where visual contacts were accomplished.
- Conducts direct and collateral telephonic contacts with residents who are in the community, and maintains a log which lists dates, times, and locations where telephonic contacts where accomplished.
- Administers breath analysis test on a regular basis to residents to ensure an alcohol free environment, and maintains a log in which dates, times, and readings of breath analysis are recorded.
- Follows CRC guidelines in the collection of urine samples from residents, and maintains a log in which dates, times, and types of tests are recorded.
- Conducts both individual body searches (pat downs), and facility unit searches (shakedowns) regularly to control the possible introduction of contraband.
- Recognizes violations of rules and policies and follows through with a clear, concise written report (incident report) of the facts whenever a serious violation occurs; participates in the disposition process of all incident reports; participates as a board member for Disciplinary Boards.
- Operates and monitors both visual and audio surveillance equipment within the facility.
- Admits and discharges residents and completes all required paperwork involved with both procedures.
- Receives all moneys coming into the facility for processing. Issues receipts for these funds.
- Computes resident sentences using Alaska Sentencing Standards.
- Maintains an extensive software, and hard filing system.
- Responsible for safe transport of residents in company vehicles.
Knowledge/Abilities/Skills
- Must be familiar with completing required database entries, preparing statistical reports, preparing automated forms and basic word processing duties.
- Ability to present a polite, professional demeanor when dealing with the public and other agencies. Must ensure State and Federal Privacy Act guidelines are followed.
- Ability to recognize and use therapeutic communication techniques in staff and resident interaction: demonstrates active listening principles; uses appropriate non-verbal communication; deals with anxiety, conflict and confrontation in an appropriate manner.
- Ability to apply appropriate positive/negative reinforcement principles when dealing with all residents.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check, have a current Alaska driver’s license and no more than two minor moving violations within the last three years.
Experience/Training
- High School education required.
- Associates Degree or higher or equivalent job experience in a related field is preferred.
- Current CPR and Industrial First Aid certification.
- Sociology, Psychology, and communication courses desired.
- Must be familiar with substance abuse issues and treatment methodology.
- Should be cognizant of cultural issues unique to Alaska.
- Familiar with medical and social services agencies in the City and Borough of Juneau.
